i will admit that it surprised me with its twists near the end, but mainly because it just feels so out of nowhere lol
also within the first 5 minutes it gets things wrong, talking about the victors of the battle of sekigahara but the scene specifies that it takes place on the 15th of october. the battle of sekigahara didn't take place until the 21st. they should have just not given an exact date but instead decided to be inaccurate for no reason
although the op does kind of slap, but the ending animation did annoy me. who the hell is watching that tv in this immaculate room, you will never find out. it isn't even nonsensical in an interesting way, it's just mostly static images of someone watching reused clips from the series. baffling choice all around

I watched Ooku: The Inner Chambers this weekend. I am shocked that no one is talking about it. It was on my (well, technically my friend's 
) Netflix feed for a while but I never watched it because I assumed it would be a hollow revenge fantasy that I wouldn't want to indulge. Wrong was I. I recommend this anime for people who have enjoyed heavily political dramas like Gundam and Star Trek, and for people who have enjoyed thoughtful gender deconstructions like Utena. It's only 10 episodes. Very dense, very sad, very nuanced. Lifelike characters. I have mixed feelings about the ending and I'm not sure what the author was trying to say, if anything more than presenting a situation as is. I think it's a study of how societies, individuals, and the concept of gender, adapt to all kinds of circumstances. It's historically accurate, with the obvious alt history twist that is treated in universe as a secret conspiracy. Considering reading the manga. Hopefully they make a season 2.

i got a trial of the crunchyroll amazon video channel (because i wanted to rewatch shin godzilla), and i decided to throw on fafner to rewatch after not watching it since it first aired
do crunchyroll use machine translation for the subtitles or something, because these are a mess. one of the first lines says "steel fastener" randomly and i was like, what. i just realised it was mistaking 'fafner' ファフナー for 'fastener' ファスナー. it's the name of the show and you messed it up in the second line of dialogue
it seem to get better after the opening but that didn't last. it gets characters' names wrong (calling kazuki 'keisuke/katsuki', soushi 'sushi') yet used the first name 'kenji' where the audio uses his surname 'kondou' so you do know the character names?? lines that aren't 'steel fastener'-level wrong are unnatural or stilted, or internally inconsistent ("so she's come back, hasn't he?")
i think i have heard they don't pay translators at cr well and they get rushed, but i thought that was more for simucast shows airing now. this is a show from 2004
edit; i turned off the subs eventually but the next episode repeats the 'steel fastener' line so i turned them on again to see if it got fixed

I saw the 1990s Berserker anime series. Totally different story to my preconceptions. I thought it was going to be a lot darker, something along the lines of the last episode or two for the entire thing. Maybe that's what the manga is like. I dunno, but I did hear it being described as dark among other things. Given my expectations going into it, I'm not sure what I feel about the real thing in comparison. It was certainly watchable. I was not bored watching it (I binged it in two sessions). I was particularly thrown by a song in it linked below, not in a bad way. It was again just completely not what I was expecting. The music grew on me. It's surreal, and fit the story, etc. The voice acting was bad, but that was normal for that era, so it didn't bother me / wasn't distracting. I'm left wanting to now watch a story based on my preconceptions of this one, not that it would be an improvement

This is the most absurdly relatable nostalgic experience, that kicked up a bunch of memories for me – so on that note:

To this day, the Toonami TV dub of Outlaw Star still holds a RIDICULOUSLY strong place in my mind, especially because of the TV censorship of swearing leading to lines like, "Blast you!" being used consistently throughout the show always felt like they were an intentionally unique part of that setting, and that's still a part of how that lives in my head, even long after I've watched the complete versions on DVD.
Also, I still prefer the slightly more dulled colors of the DVD set compared to the BluRay remasters, because it feels like those are more accurate to the overall palette of that era of anime and the sort of grimy lived-in world (sort of in the same way that some pixel art doesn't feel right on modern TVs but looks better on CRTs, it feels like remastering a true high color range in HDMI just doesn't deliver the same aesthetic feel).

funny that all that toonami stuff is getting brought up because i just finished gundam wing
i have made it my goal to go through all the titles featured in the super robot wars games, starting with the first gundam, gundam wing (because it's its own separate continuity), and mazinger z. watching all these series is going to involve a bunch of long 90+ episode kids series from like the 70s so i try to put them on while i'm doing other stuff lol.
i used the crunchyroll prime video channel for part of gundam (then switched to netflix japan because they skipped an episode) and gundam wing. subtitles are still bad, i even checked if it was just the website version by watching on the ps5 app and it was still bad.
names were especially bad. from little ones like:
haro - haru
tem rey - tim racer
amuro - amro, amaru, tomorrow??
get onboard white base = get on board. white face.
to probably the worst, frau bow, who got called (among others before i stopped keeping track): falbo, bravo, fran, krobo??, lord robbo??? switching to japanese netflix at least avoided all that (some of the later episodes didn't even have english subtitles at all on crunchyroll). although there was one episode where the japanese closed captions didn't match the audio because the word originally used is considered offensive nowadays. but it still played the audio unaltered.
gundam wing didn't fare better. i don't think it got quatre's or trowa's names right once. wufei was 'woof' more than a few times. relena dorian was 'lena dalton' once. gundamium 'cadmium' or 'scamdium'. called a gundam a 'condom'. oz was 'oss/aus/US'. i guess noin is vietnamese because they kept calling her 'nguyen'. zechs got zeke, zacks, lieutenant x, and most commonly 'sex'. choice lines include 'sex is in the atmosphere' and 'long live lord sex!'
but unlike the original gundam, i have previously seen the english dub of gw when they used to show it late nights here long ago. and one thing that stuck with me all these years for some reason was zechs in the first episode saying 'that will do just dandy' and 'not too shabby'.
so when these mangled subtitles used those choices of words, i was like. wait a minute, i think i've solved this. i think the english sub tracks are just using a machine transcribed version of the english dub's audio. to back up my theory, the subtitle tracks also match where references to alcohol are changed in the english dubs (getting changed to 'a cup of joe' in an episode of gw, or a mention of champagne becoming 'soda pop' in the original gundam). they would also sometimes try to transcribe things that aren't dialogue, like og's eye catcher sound or parts of the lyrics to insert songs in gw (but not the whole lyrics so it doesn't look intentional).
so despite complete subtitle tracks no doubt existing, they just ran it through a computer to get a dub transcript and just. never bothered to check it for all the broken grammar like sentences. ending in random. places or running on to the next line, or even to get names correct. which is very lazy of them. maybe that's what was happening with fafner as well.
anyway the whole way through the original gundam i was hoping the little kids would leave the show so i would be free of their antics, and even after all these years i still hate wufei in gw which makes me a bit sad because i like his gundam. i just wish it wasn't piloted by this little misogynist

It's ridiculously frustrating knowing that genuinely more work went into the old Chinese bootleg anime DVDs that you'd buy off of eBay or some other sketchy site back in the early 2000s than we get in official streaming releases now.
The fansub industry back then undercut the official releases with an impossible-to-maintain pipeline for speed, which is both why there's simultaneous dub/sub releases for some series, but also that same thing was setting itself up for naturally being replaced by just total lazy automation outright. Just... ugh, it's so annoying that stuff like this doesn't have ANY sort of post-pipeline editorial process even for something as well-established as Gundam.
Either way, hats off to ya for diving through so much of it despite the mangled subs. Having made my own list of things to get through, a lot of which are also older 70s anime with varying target audiences, I can relate to having some of them going on the side while you're doing something else.

Yeah it's weird that they could license the show itself but not any official subtitle work? I have Gundam Wing on official DVD release, and they have real subtitles. (I mean, they might be dubtitles, I haven't checked, but they at least get the names and grammar right).

i am using a more dubious site for mazinger z, which also has a poorly done subtitle track of similar quality. but there's also another option you can select for a better quality one as well
and that isn't a site you have to pay a subscription for!!! lazy bastards

Man it's been a while since I read through All You Need Is Kill, and I had no idea they were doing an anime adaptation. I'm definitely into this, and I really dig just how vividly colorful it is. Keeping fingers crossed everything with the production goes smoothly!!

i watched the first episode of zeta gundam on the prime crunchyroll channel, which has actual proper subtitles. that's good! but because of the licensing mess it doesn't have the op or ed vocal tracks. that's bad! do i put up with not getting "z - toki wo koete" or find another way to watch it
still continuing with my super robot wars mission, which is feeling like a sisyphean task
by my count there's 214 different titles featuring across the whole srw series, and i have fully watched a total of 17 so far (not counting things i've seen part of but ended up dropping off for whatever reason in the past or stuff i'm currently watching). some of those are other srw titles or banpresto originals, and a couple are just like... i think gunpla projects originally to just make up new variants of gundams? and sometimes a title will just have a mech appearing with no story stuff but i included them anyway. but the vast majority are anime series, with a scattering of manga and novels. and a whole bunch of these are series with around 50 episodes.
the main core, foundational titles that make up the majority of appearances including their sequels and spin-offs are the universal century gundam series, getter robo, and mazinger z. and sometimes a later entry of a franchise will have more appearances than the earlier ones (zeta gundam and char's counterattack appear more frequently than gundam 0079, endless waltz appears more than gundam w, gundam seed destiny more than the other gundam seed titles
so i am up to zeta gundam (but i'm trying to watch the 0079 films first), 1 episode of getter robo, and 35 out of 92 episodes of mazinger z. that's the main line-up for the first game so i'm starting there, but also trying to break it up by watching some ovas or films as well to chip away at the list more and bring down that remaining total (and so i'm not just watching 70s go nagai robot shows all the time before i move onto... more go nagai robot shows on the list).
first up was dangaioh, which wasn't bad. also the op for the first 2 episode slaps. 'skip intro'? no, replay intro like 10 times before continuing with the episode and spend the rest of the day just saying 'cross fight! cross fight!' to myself at random points

i have finally finished mazinger z, which was the longest on the list of super robot wars shows i planned on watching* at 92 episodes. i am really bad at getting through tv series in general so this is a big deal for me. my favourite character ended up being boss. i get it was the 70s but sayaka gets slapped around by the protagonist an uncomfortable amount of times for me. if i had a pet who has that funny fur where half their face is one pattern and the other is different i want to name them ashura so i can shout 'baron ashura!' for them. i went into it thinking that dr. hell would have a sort of palpatine thing going on where he looked like a regular person who changes into his present form somehow but then they show a flashback early on and he just... always looked like that and i guess was also called 'dr. hell' and everyone was just like, yeah that seems fine.
i am now moving on to getter robo, which i've started watching the odd episode while getting through maginzer z, and checking out the mazinger z films. some of them just seem to be single episodes of the show blown up to play at cinemas, and the only copies i could find are low quality rips with some questionable subtitles burnt into the video so i feel safe skipping them
but one of the films is mazinger z vs. devilman, so do i have to watch the old 70s devilman show which afaik was its own thing from the manga and other adaptations which i have read/seen. at least it's not 92 episodes
also watched fight! iczer 1 to clear another ova off the list, which was okay. i like the look of old 80s cell animation, and it has kaneto shiozawa who is always nice to hear pop up. but then i made the mistake of looking at the prototype manga chapter (which was boring), then flicking through the other stories in the book. which seemed to involve the author's self-insert avatar character killing a bunch of female characters in sexually violent ways and frankly, my assessment of the ova has risen that it's not like and my assessment of the manga author is that they should put this guy on some kind of register.

i decided to start the first super robot wars games (remake on the ps vita) just to see what it was like, and it turns out i don't need to worry about the stories of the original animes too much. my exposure to srw has been demos or clips of later games where they incorporate the stories of the originals into a big kingdom hearts-esque crossover (except characters will tag along and interact with ones from different shows instead of kh's method of keeping individual worlds separate). maybe it's because the first game was originally on the game boy, but they don't even have pilots in this one. it's just a world where i guess all the robots are just sentient beings in their own right and the extent of the story content is a few pages of text at the start, one page of text before each stage, and that seems to be it. it's just its own self-contained thing. the remake adds a second half to the game after the og story but i don't know if that's going to be the same '2-3 lines of set up' as part one. so i am just playing that now anyway, which will allow me to tick off one of the 50+ srw games off my list.
