I'm excited just to have the PDF of details to a sequel story to FFIX. If they manage to produce it, even better. I hope the buzz about the project at least gets the profit-minded folks in charge to see the potential.

Should be noted that this is just a pitch, there's no guarantee that exact story would become the final product.

Oh that's interesting, the animated series would be a sequel, not a direct adaptation of the original game. I actually think that would safer route to go and arguably have more creative freedom to experiment with.

Some updates in a while:

Cyber Group Studios (the ones behind the project) filed for bankruptcy in October 2024. However, last month it was made public that a joint-venture was interested in acquiring the company, and FF9 was specifically mentioned as a project they were looking to complete funding for:

Cyber Group Studios has been ordered to be liquidated by a French court.

French animation outfit Cyber Group Studios will be liquidated, according to a ruling by the Paris Commercial Court. This means that none of the sale bids from various outfits that were on the table over the past few months will go through. The studio’s assets will now have to be sold off to pay the studio’s creditors, according to an exclusive report by French trade publication, Ecran Total.

Cyber Group, which is best known for popular animated properties such as Gigantosaurus, Zou, Alex Player, Zorro: The Chronicles, Taffy and Press Start, had been in judicial recovery for insolvent French companies since November. The court had noted that the studio had a six-month window until April 30, 2025 to either recover financially or completely liquidate in order to repay its creditors. Despite having four takeover offers from Hildegarde, Solent Productions, Newen Studios and a joint venture between United Smile, Toonz Media Group and Atlas Global, the court to liquidate Cyber Group instead. Among the studio’s biggest assets were its popular Gigantosaurus IP and an upcoming animated show based on Square Enix’s Final Fantasy IX game.

So that still means someone else is going to end up purchasing the rights to make the animated series? Since it's considered an asset?

(emphasis mine)
That's a little on the nose to be a coincidence 🤔 But I'm 84% sure that it is

What a shame. I wonder if it'll get consigned to dev hell or somehow get rescued?

Yeah but that doesnt gurantee that the buyer will fund or get someone to fund the making of the series.

Yeah, and as typically goes in situations like this, once a project moves teams (or even changes directors) it’s almost a guarantee that all the pre-established ideas are scrapped, simply because the new folks in charge need to feel like it’s wholly their own. Ugh.
