Dragon Age

Hey, did anyone get this game? I was curious what some people thought of it. I can't really tell if I'd like it or not. Obviously I'm a JRPG guy but I've enjoyed western RPGs such as Oblivion and, more comparable, Icewind Dale.

The combat seemed awfully choppy to me though, which I know sounds a little ridiculous from a JRPG guy, but those are always turn-based, not real time - freeze - real time - freeze. It just looked a little jarring, but maybe I'm wrong.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Actually, no - Oblivion's first person and mainly about your main character, whereas Dragon Age has multiple characters, is more based on strategy, and isn't as much fun in my experience so far.

The battle system just doesn't work really well. Figuring which is your selected character is tricky, selecting an enemy is tricky, having to swap characters to have a chance at winning is meh, the camera isn't really working for me during combat, andsoforth.

I'm playing it to see if the story will draw me in. If the gameplay turns out to be frustrating, I'll just swap to easy - I've read that you can just leave the other characters to automagic that way, which is fine by me.

Having to pause the game every few seconds just to be able to win isn't funny. I didn't need to use the feature in KotOR either.

Obv, :monster:.

But you do have a point. The market for such types of RPG's is niche at best.

Dragon Age, it's pretty cash.

You can either bitchslap the mom and kill the kid, or ritually slaughter the mom and save the kid. Nobody does the proper option 3 because it takes too long. Lawful good is for pussies.

Huh? :monster:

Oh, and I did the 3rd option because I had to save the Circle anywayp

Yes, regardless of my criticism, I'm still playing it. And there's no fun in doing the ubergood thing.

I guess but you had to go there anyway, and I knew from playing video games that there's never actually any urgency unless there's a timer in the corner.

Speaking of the super good thing, it bothers me that Morrigan and...the big guy, Sten I think, dislike you for helping the people you have NO CHOICE but to help. You NEED Arl Eamon's help for the main quest, but they yell at you for wasting time if you sa you'l help Redcliffe. Dumb.

I love Sten, it's a shame he disagrees with everything :monster:.

And I hate Alistair, he brings lulz into the game, but disagrees with everything too.

In fact, I can only get the dog to agree with me. :(

To be honest, I'm starting to feel like I'm more playing it to see the end of the story (and the character's bantering back and forth - are there actually two characters that like each other?) than actually enjoying the gameplay, since that one's getting a bit repetitive. Might also be because I'm playing it on easy, which makes it rather unchallenging (although it's tricky enough for me at times) though.

Also, is there a DA thread?

Yes. And that is exactly how I feel about that game. I'm glad to see you had the same reaction. They really spent a lot of effort on this world and story so I'm really playing to see its conclusion. But I really have more fun navigating the dialogue trees than the actual combat.

Indeed. That's also why Bioware's previous 'hardkawr' RPG's like Baldur's Gate and such didn't really convince me. I'm sure they were excellent in terms of content, depth, story and all, but the gameplay just put me off. Mind you, this applies less in Dragon Age, which is why I'm still playing it, but it's still a game for the more hardcore RPG players.

I am loving Dragon Age. I honestly don't think any game has addicted me as much since FFVII. Combat can be a bit of a pain, but its not so bad if you play on easy difficulty. Story is simple, but very well done, and the character developement for your party is exceptional.

I honestly don 't undertsand the difficulty some people are having with keeping party members happy. Its easy for me. And on the rare occasion I fuck something up dialogue wise, a good gift is always handy to mend things.

I give it a solid 8.5 out of 10.

Didn't even know this thread existed.

Probably best to use this one since it's more active not counting the Inquisition one.

But... but... spoilers!!

(Which is why I probably won't be discussing DA on TLS, or in #tls, or on Skype :wacky:)

You don't have to talk about spoilers until you finish it. You can talk about which Origin you went with and why, which characters you like right now, if you like the gamplay and if you're enjoying the game so far.

Hehehe, that's Carlie-logic all right :monster:

I think I'll play it safe for now, but I'll be back when I've finished the game :)
