I need more pop culture in my life, it's really sad how little i understand of some very popular movie references and the like. I didn't even know what woodstock was until 11th grade >.>

It's not like my parents were really adamant about what i did or did not watch, or knew about American culture or whatever, but there are a lot of moives/ cultural things in general i need to catch up on.

So I need a list of really awesome influential movies that you guys think are a must see.

Things I haven't seen that I think i should see:
The Matrix
Back to the future
Forest Gump
Anastasia(never got to this one, I really do want to see it though)
Lord of the Rings Movies

I can't really think of anything at the moment, but any suggestions would be much appreciated!

objectively each of these is worth at least an 8/10 and I would recommend all of them for people who are interested in their respective genres

Pretty much all that Aaron suggested there. I'd like to add that anything by the Coen brothers is worth a watch.

Apologies if you've already seen any of these:

Alien
Aliens
Blade Runner
Terminator
Terminator 2
Predator
The Thing (1982 version)
The Shining
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters 2 :awesome:
Groundhog Day
Heathers
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
The Producers (1968 version!)

Yeah, pretty random list there, I can't guarantee all of them are 8/10 or over, but they are all enjoyable romps :monster: I'll post more if I think of any.

Culturally impacting movies, eh? As opposed to a mere "My favourite movies" thread. Damn. I apologise for any repeats, and in no particular order:

The Fifth Element; Ghost in the Shell; Labyrinth (featuring David Bowie :P); Spirited Away; Princess Mononoke; Iron Man; Total Recall; Conan the Barbarian (1982); Casino Royale (2006); Terminator 2; Akira.

You guys need to see Back to the Future!!! I just saw a midnight showing last night at an old Chicago theater.
I'll add more of my favorites if you haven't watched it.

Wayne's World
Dumb and Dumber
Spaceballs
The Goonies
Office Space

Alex, Ashes, Pennywise, Bill Weasley, Jack's Smirking Revenge, Sterling Archer
Seraphim Falls, Pan's Labyrinth, 3:10 to Yuma, The Big Lebowski, Fargo, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Pulp Fiction, Crank, Dog Soldiers, Moon, Mulholland Drive, Planet Terror, Super, Watchmen, District 9, Fight Club, The Fountain, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, There Will Be Blood, Coraline, Twelve Monkeys, American History X, The Prestige, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dogma, Drag Me to Hell, The Social Network, Troll Hunter, Army of Darkness, Troll Hunter, Requiem for a Dream, Drive, Carnage, Warrior, Sunshine, Brick.

Off the top of my head. These are all excellent and incredibly interesting movies. Maybe not for their plot, but there is something incredibly compelling or fascinating about a certain element (whether it be the direction, art design, writing, whatever) about all of these that definitely warrants a look.

Ugh, no, not GITS. Not without the Manga beforehand. It's visually amazing, but just so... plodding.

Lupin- Castle Cagliostro.

7 Samurai

Original Tron, just to see the start of modern computer animation.

^We aren't talking about "great" films, we're talking about "culturally impacting" films. Whether you like it or not, GITS generally makes such lists when it comes to animated movies. I also admit a bit of a bias, but its still true :awesome:. Of course the manga is better, but the average joe blow who wants to be culturally educated probably doesn't care to go that far. Speaking of animated films:

A nightmare before Christmas.

I also don't want Zealk to be bored out of her skull, and so I'm not saying 'don't watch it' I'm saying 'prepare yourself with the superior form of it first'

The movie's a lot easier to appreciate when you know what it's getting at first and can appreciate the visuals and the music and not the very very dry deliveries of lines.

Isn't it also suggested you watch the animé series before watching the film, or am I misremembering?

If you want TV shows I have a ton of stuff to recommend too. A fair kickoff selection would be The West Wing, Doctor Who (start with the Ninth Doctor), Firefly, Battlestar Galactica (start with the 2003 miniseries), Lost, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Castle, Scandal, and Once upon a Time, though there is plenty of other great stuff I'm not including. And I'll throw in The Wire even though I haven't seen it, because p. much everyone whose taste I respect says it's one of if not the best TV shows of all time. ONE OF THE BEST TV SHOWS OF ALL TIME! /kanye

The two are unrelated, but the Anime is a superior watch, even with the added length.

HERESY!

But I say that as a long time Whovian. I started on Pertwee, and I'm no worse for it. No knock against Dr. Destro, but I wouldn't tell anyone to JUST watch NuWho.

I'm not saying just watch NuWho. I intend to go back and see the old episodes after I catch up with the new show, or at least a collection of highlights (I'll probably start with the season where Adams was script editor). But the new episodes are almost certainly a better place for people used to modern television to start.

As far as animé series go, Cowboy Bebop is absolutely essential.

Trying to pick up on any that no-one's mentioned yet.

Sin City, you motherfuckers
That is an artistic smorgasbord

I really, really enjoyed the first times I saw both GitS movies. They're of a completely different cloth than the television series, perhaps less true to the manga but with Mamoru Oshii and Kenji Kawai at the helm it's a breathtaking mindfuck to behold (esp. Innocence)

Basically I loved both the TV series and films and they both have different strengths

also existential angst lol

I liked the movies better when they were the GITS manga.
Like I said, in terms of visuals and soundtrack the movies are a joy, but they're just not up to snuff with the rest of GITS, IMO.

Well, apart from the PS2 game. Not the PS1 game, that's just straight up awesome.

I would say series too, but they're always a lot longer to watch than a 1-3 hour movie

That's quite true, but the depth you get in a really good television series can be better than the depth you get in a really good film because there's much more time to develop characters. I actually prefer TV series to films these days when they're well done.

By the end of the first S.A.C, I was starting to notice their formula of having an intensely mind-blowing thing happen that has the viewers at the edge of their seats, and then finishing the episode with a classic "BUT THEY PLANNED IT ALL ALONG"/"BUT WAIT IT NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED BECAUSE X WAS ACTUALLY Y"/"THE LAUGHING MAN CAME ALONG AND FUCKED UP EVERYONE'S PLANS"

one of those 3 :monster:
