My guess would be the other gaming events that came recently like the Summer Game Fest and such may have caused too much competition for E3. The pandemic was probably the final straw the broke the camel's back and since the online event is for free, they decided to not go through it at all.
They might bounce back next year, but that's very unlikely and the pandemic is far from over even though it's slowly settling down.

It being during a single month is good at least. The fun of E3 was having an avalanche of news within a few days, SGF with its random events spread out over 3 months was just...I mean, that's a very loose "event".
I'll miss E3 though. I think those days of a super condensed hype cycle are over =<

Honestly, I prefer Geoff Summer Game Fest approach, at least its 2020-2021 version, a more spread out release of news was healthier than a hyper concentrated 3 days of news, gave better spotlight to smaller devs.
