You know, once it was okayed for Steam but still nothing for XBox, it was quite clear that it wouldn't come to XBox? I don't really know why people kept hoping.... for me, as someone who mainly plays on PC, I plan on buying a PS *because* it's the JRPG platform. The competition between platforms has always entailed exclusives, in one or the other platform, PC being the only one to get most of the games (except for Nintendo exclusives). I think I said it here quite a long time ago that I didn't think Remake would ever come to XBox and it looks like I was right. It sucks, but it boils down to the competition between Microsoft and Sony at this point.

I do find it ironic that this came to light in connection with the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard regulatory scrutiny, because Sony raising concerns about the future of the Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms was a factor in instigating that regulatory scrutiny in the first place. That being said, I still think Sony's not wrong to raise CoD concerns due to the popularity of that franchise

VII Remake on PS5 just received its first update (1.001.000)

Apparently it changes Tifa's flashback outfit to match how it is in Reunion and Rebirth (black undershirt instead of cleavage :monster: )

It also FINALLY fixes the opening cinematics music. You may recall the PS5 music used what was clearly a temp track with generic vocal samples instead of a choir singing the lyrics to OWA and also wasn't in sync with the logo drop.
How they accidentally dropped a temp track in an updated version baffles me until this day :monster:
Anyway, the PS5 version now matches the PS4 and PC releases again, I just confirmed it myself. :flipmonster:

edit: The PS4 and PC versions also received the Tifa update

And while I'm in a mad scramble to finish the game on Hard Mode (along with the Manuscripts) to get that elusive Platinum Trophy before my Rebirth copy comes in, no less.

I'm really happy and surprised this patch exists. Would've made sense to release it 6 months ago when the Rebirth/Remake Twin Pack became available (and before my own playthrough), but I'll take it. Really curious if there's any other minor changes. I tried Googling for more info, but couldn't find anything because everyone was freaking out about the Tifa change. El oh el.

I like Aerith's old line more too, but I'm assuming it was changed to line up with CCR/Rebirth. People have theorized since Intergrade that there's some connection between Aerith, the rain, and the other world Zack is in. We'll see.

As for the Sector 5 skybox, it's also incorrect in CCR and Rebirth (at least judging from the Sept State of Play trailer), so to fix it now would actually make it inconsistent :monster:

Hooray! The new Remake patch brought back the crown above the play log when you've completed it. Previously it only appeared on PS4. It even appears in Intermission now.

Okay, how come nobody told me that Chapter 18 is no longer blocked from recording on the PS5 version like it was on the PS4 version? I literally disabled HDCP on my PS5 and hooked up my AverMedia Live Gamer Portable for NOTHING here.

Man, time absolutely FLIES by. It's crazy to think that it's already been half a decade.

It's also weird to have the perspective that it was only 6¾ years between the original Final Fantasy VII's release in January 1997 and the first announcement of Advent Children at TGS in September 2003, because that gap still feels like it was utterly monumental by comparison.

So, to me that means that we'll be having REMAKE marketing covering things at least until the end of 2025 – so IF we get anything other than a Title for the Part 3 this year, I'll be quite surprised – since that's not even the Xbox playerbase hitting Rebirth yet.

From the SquareEnix marketing & development strategy to expand outside of just single platform releases, I expect that what they're doing is getting everywhere onto the same page with Rebirth being available on goddamn EVERYTHING before they kick into the marketing for Part 3 – because then they can drop a sale for both parts on EVERYTHING to pull in anyone who hasn't played the first games yet.

With Part 3 needing to pull in what feels like big numbers for all of the boardroom types, this is a pretty brilliant strategy. It'll be able to make the numbers LOOK excellent, especially compared to what they looked like for just PS5 & then Steam much later on prior releases. On top of that, the new ROG Xbox Ally having Steam games and also releasing around the holidays is going to play into that strategy, and make their efforts a lot more efficient to release into a much MUCH larger total playerbase.

However, I also see this as good news from the development side of things, because if they're in a place for converting resources to dive back into REMAKE again that will be wrapped up by the end of the year, this most likely means that there's at least some segment of the Dev team that's probably doing active work on the "Return to Midgar" portion of the game – because that's when diving into all of those assets again is going to be directly related to the ongoing Part 3 development work and it's more efficient to have all your teams going into that at once.

So, while it's no REAL news, and even what we can glean from it isn't surprising it does make me feel like things are going smoothly, as this is a bit of a loose framework for having a sense that things behind the scenes are going well with their roadmap. A small 2025 holiday season tease of Past 3 information isn't out of the question – but it's likely not gonna be anything big if they do, because they're working to ramp up the larger audience all at once.

I'd expect that flag for Part 3 and the proper marketing gets planted early into 2026 with the release date in 2027 for the 30th Anniversary to drum up maximum hype at the biggest early event that they can, because they want the calendar room to be able to basically drop uncontested by anything else. I'd ALSO anticipate that they likely want to land either before the Japanese Fiscal Year closes (majority of sales before the end of March), OR they want to capture as much as possible into a single Fiscal Year which would instead be early April, depending on where they want those big numbers to land (which will largely be financial performance driven which I don't pay attention to much and not NEARLY close enough to make a guess at one way or another).

Yeah, I think this year’s Game Awards in December will likely be the soonest we get meaningful part 3 news/updates.

@X-SOLDIER so is your current guestimate for part 3’s release window early/the first third of 2027?

My current guestimate for part 3’s release window is still late/the last third of 2027.
