No FFXIII till 2010 for the rest of the world

I think Final Fantasy can afford to focus less on cutscenes and more on gameplay. Their cutting edge visuals are so awesome that focusing a bit more to make the gameplay even better wouldn't hurt it at all.

It's still going to be 70% story and 30% gameplay anyway.

Look at FFXIII, everything we've seen so far are story details, character designs, and cutscenes, with actual battle footage taking little part in it.

But that's the Square Enix way! And that's when they're deciding that anybody can see their precious footage at all. Wankers.

Ok what? Plenty of games this gen have a heavier focus on story. Hell even the FPS games are aiming for more ambitious stories.

Also, shooting games are for hardcore/casual. It's got jackshit to do with cutscenes. Less story=/= more casual. If anything RPGS are more casual than anything because actual gameplay usually takes a backseat to storyline.

Ninja Gaiden has a completely shitty story, but great gameplay, and it's definitely NOT for casual gamers.

Besides, it's an FF game, story is still going to be the main emphasis, so there's nothing to worry about.

What do you mean by plenty of games that focus on story. And it's not so much that either, it's that the GAMERS of today complain if the games are too story based where they have to sit and watch something. Obviously you missed the back lash of DMC4 when it came out.

The thing is, FF is know for it's stories. If you start taking it out more and more, then it's going to be disappointing.

That's not really a good judge for either of our cases. They could just be willingly not showing the battle footage.

Plenty of games this gen focus on story. And no, the GAMERS of today don't complain if they're story based, such a broad generalization is not applicable. In fact, more and more gamers have been complaining about shitty stories in games. A large portion of the community has been pushing for more developed, and engrossing stories in games other than RPGS. Most only complain when the story steals away more time from the gameplay rather than being there to complement it.

This is most of the time applicable to action games more than others. Backlash from DMC4? Don't know what board you were own, but the general consensus on the gaming sites I browse is that the cutscenes were cheezy and cool, but the game failed because it rehashed so many stages and bosses in it's latter half.

The cutscenes were never really the main complaint versus gameplay flaws. DMC is a really bad example anyway.

The thing is, FF is know for it's stories. If you start taking it out more and more, then it's going to be disappointing.

SE isn't stupid enough to minimalize the story. It's not like you can't have a good deal of gameplay AND story.

It just goes to show that SE knows fans care more about the story before the gameplay. They could have waiting to release gameplay details versus story, but they didn't.

Im just speaking from experience with DMC4. Gameplay problems aside, Ive heard TONS of people complaining about the story of that game. As well as Metal Gear Solid and Xenosaga.

Yes, but the article quoted Kitase as saying that they will be focusing less so on cutscenes and more about gameplay. Im just worried that eventually, they will end up minimizing the stories with gameplay taking up more of the show.

That's probably mostly because a lot of people don't like those stories in those games, either find them stupid or nonsensical. I don't see TONS but I've seen groups of people complaining about those stories of those games.

Cutscenes don't make up the entirety of an RPG's story though.

They do make up a pretty good portion though, especially now since there isnt much CG and there are much more cutscenes to show off the graphics engines. Im just worried about it is all.

I just hope they do away with CG cutscenes mostly. In this day and age, they're not necessary.

Now that I do agree with. I mean, I can see in some cases where it is useful, like the mass airship battles and stuff. The technology just isnt there yet. But the games are starting to get to the point where they look almost as good as CG, and it's less expensive for the developers.

Even with scenes with huge battles or mass numbers of creatures can be done in-engine, recorded on a hi spec machine, and then implemented into the game. Like Gears 2 and Mgs4 did.

Not necessarily. There could be alot of slowdown if the system cant handle it. It could be a bigger risk, but it could be done. Im thinking next gen we will see much more of that.

No, you're not getting me. I'm talking about recording the cutscene in engine on a high end PC, then implementing it into the game like a FMV, but still preserving the look of the ingame graphics.

It's what Gears and MGS did for a few cutscenes.

Ah ok, I see what you mean. I thought you meant having it all being rendered in real time on the PS3/Xbox 360. Honestly, it wouldnt be capable of doing so. But what you are suggesting would be possible.

It IS possible, and with the right programming and coding, you can fit a lot of shit on one screen, with all kinds of effects.

The second level in Gears of war 2 is proof enough.
