IS NO ONE ON HERE WATCHING THIS SHOW!?

I just finished marathoning the new season and now I feel hollow inside.

I don't know how to stuff this void with feelings because I sure as hell can't stuff it with more episodes.

I AM I AM BF AND I BOTH LOVE IT

It's the show we've both overall liked the best of all of the shows we've watched together. We've just started the two first episodes of season 2 so I'm afraid I'll be staying away from this thread until we're done cus SPOILERSSS

But yes. Huge fans. We're both in love with Taystee & Poussey (that scene in season 1 had us both tear up) and we both crushed on Vicky Jeudy.

I watched the first season, but haven't started the second yet. My girlfriend hasn't seen any of it, so I'm going to have to start over anyway.

Also, should I avoid this thread for now or will we mark spoilers?

I just watched both seasons in 2 days. No regrets.

One of the best shows Ive seen, and really refreshing to have a full hour of content, instead of 40 min + adverts.

Love it! Amazing. But as I don't have internet and haven't seen Season 2, I will be avoiding this thread until further notice.

Will mark spoilers, I was just being a cryptic douche :P

I am really curious to see everyone's thoughts on the degrees of which characters are redeemable after this season and why.

I found myself incredibly weepy this season. Almost every episode I felt something worth crying over. That probably has a lot to do with hormonal fluctuations, but the writers definitely upped the intensity since s1. Don't get me wrong - it remains hilarious - but there were certain scenes where I was simply wrecked.

Really excited to see the critical responses to this show. I definitely felt a lot more sympathy for the [sorta well-intentioned, but often still horrible] dude characters than I did last season. I think that is a really interesting juxtaposition to the "main villain" of the season, who is just so unquestionably horrible. I'm curious how people will respond to how the show depicts this character.

YOU FUCKING GO MISS ROSA. Just. Omg. That was so touching and inspirational I just couldn't deal. Usually I'm pretty resilient to cancer stories but god that one just snuck up from behind and kicked me in the ass. I never expected this character to be as important to the show as she ended up being.

I like that this season focuses more on the other girls, not just Piper. I love seeing their back stories.

So what's the pitch for reasons to watch this / what's it generally about?

Based on the little bits that I've seen (aside from tumblr orgasming all over itself about it), it's a prison drama of sorts(?) -- which generally holds absolutely zero interest to me (haven't had any urge to watch things like Breaking Bad either, because despite good performances I haven't got any general interest in the overall premise of the show itself).

It's a drama that leans toward comedy. The main character is sent to prison for drug smuggling when she was younger. You get to know each of the women as time goes on through flashbacks to what led them there. You also get to know the people who run the place

It's basically a fish out of water story.

It's well written. WATCH IT!

Ah, ok. Most drama shows & especially comedy drama really isn't my thing, so I'll probably opt out, but I'll probably end up running it by my roommate if he isn't already watching it, since that stuff's more his cup o' tea.

Thanks, Pixel!!

I would say it leans more towards comedy than drama. Yes it is dramatic and heart-wrenching but I feel like the reason the show has me is because it's better at making me laugh than cry (though I do the latter as well, but that's probably because I am slightly manic). In that sense it's about 10000% less grimdark than something like Breaking Bad, which I found far too OOT for me to really take seriously.

It's based off a real person's stint in prison. The author of the original memoir (Piper Kerman, who is Piper Chapman on the show) serves as a producer for the series. I say this because I think as silly as things can get, it's an example of a lot of the integrity the show has. It is pretty consistent in letting viewers get a feeling of how fucked up the prison industrial complex can be.

While not similar genre-wise at all, if I were to compare OITNB to anything, I would say I enjoy it for similar reasons I really like LOST. The structure of the story telling is virtually the same. The main plot features a cast of characters in an enclosed space (prison/the island) dealing with a situation beyond their control and the personal conflicts that arise from that. Each episode also has a spotlight character, and the audience gets to know more about what's going on in the prison based on the flashbacks that tell about that character's past. I can't really think of any other show that takes on this format other than LOST. I really enjoy it though c:

If you're not into comedy dramas then it probably isn't your thing. I would say it is really well written and makes for a good TV experience. There is a lot of good things to say about it and it's worth passing it along to someone who may like it c:

I'd say it has more in common to elements of Scrubs. Not the really broad humour. But the way it dips into characters lives, and isnt afraid to get sentimental, or tough to watch.

Id also compare it to Girls. Thats another show everyone should watch.

I'm on episode 5 of season 1 and loving this show so far, it's really well done. The whole crazy eyes thing is hilarious as well as disturbing, I think that's why I like this show so much. The emotional stuff is also funny.

Will probably post a lot more as the season progresses.

i love orange is the new black! def one of my favorite shows. Red was my favorite and I feared for her safety multiple times during the show, lol. I also adored Morello, Poussey, and Taystree.

I felt I related to Piper in a lot of ways so I loved her too. I LOATHED Alex. Sort of in a good way though.

I feel like Alex is seriously manipulative/abusive
especially after the shit she pulled on Piper this new season : /

I'm really curious to see how people feel about the Piper/Alex stuff happening now. I saw a bunch of vitriol directed at Piper a few days ago and I couldn't help but feel very unnerved by that. Granted, I didn't know the context of the hate posts I saw. They could've been very well justified since Piper hasn't exactly been an angel either.

THANK YOU everyone in this fandom seems to really worship alex vause but she is so emotionally abusive it makes me sort of sick? so yeah I really just could not like her at all. But at the same time I admire they made a character not physically strong, but emotionally monstrous because you don't really see that as often in media and yeah. They did a mix of emotional AND physical power with Vee though and as much as I hated her I was like DANG it's been awhile since I've seen a character (that is just a typical human being) be this twisted.

Piper hasn't been an angel, but damn everyone else is so much worse. I find it hard to blame Piper for much because she was the one used. She was the one thrown into prison unfairly and while it wasn't right for her to
cheat on larry
I sort of don't blame her because she's in prison and her mind is already getting all jumbled up and her emotions are running wild not to mention the fact
THE WHOLE MEDIA SHIT LARRY PULLED WTF AND DATING HER BEST FRIEND WHILE AIDING HER IN CHEATING ON HER HUSBAND WHO SHE HAS A BABY WITH??? is so much worse than piper being emotionally confused and making a mistake

i think people put too much blame on piper tbh! not saying they shouldnt be mad at her for instance her
white privilege rant she did I LAUGHED WHEN SUZANNE THREW FOOD AT HER i was just like me 2 suzanne

I've just started watching episode 9 of season 1. I love this show.

Mainly because there's not a character I dislike? I hated Alex at first but I've kind of come round to her
even though I get that she's an emotionally manipulative evil person
and stuff.

EDIT: Sophia for president. I fucking love her.

EDIT 2: What the fuck is
Healy's deal with Piper I want to punch him in the face.

EDIT 3: Hahahahaha omg that school visit episode

since piper is the main character, i feel like it only makes sense for the audience to be seduced by alex to some degree as well.

she's a really interesting character, and i do think she genuinely loves piper. but she is extremely manipulative of her. that's just her character.

i would say i don't hate any character............ but then healy. i used to hate larry a LOT but i really appreciated him and pauline this season. he's just awful to/for piper, but i think he gets to really exercise his positive qualities interacting with other people.

Healy is a typical "nice guy". He always claims he's nice// trying to be nice but he's really just an ignorant swine.
NEVER GONNA FORGIVE HIM FOR JUST STANDING THERE WHILE PIPER WAS ATTACKED

Okay so done with season 2
PREPARE TO HAVE YOUR HEART RIPPED TO SHREDS
Okay I saw this comment at around ep 3 and for the remaining 10 episodes of the season I was sitting on nails - even when things just sort of worked themselves out I was like NOOO SOMETHING BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN NOOOOOO  I was expecting a death by that comment!

I found that whole arch a bit unrealistic at first, but I need to remember it was all Vee - playing their human need for a 'family'. Vee is, although slightly unoriginal, a good character. She was more of an 'out in the open' manipulative character, which is kind of different compared to all the other characters (introduced in season 1) who are all kind of... manipulative in their own way, but not so self conscious/ direct about it. It's good they put in a proper bully character in there - I have to say though, although we got to see some of Red's more human sides, I kind of missed her BAMF side. (But then the old ladies' club took that role. OMG. Hahaha. Didnt' see that coming.)

Overall I found this season not as good as the first - it was more playing a stereotypical kind of storytelling than the first season, but that's all right. It's a TV show - if they want to keep this going, they need to add in a bit more typical TV drama (and comedy) stuff.

I also kind of didn't like what they did to Fig. How they wrote her. idk. Fig's choices were always Figs to me, due to a long life of being cynical. I understand they needed to break out her vulnerabilities, but I didn't expect them to be related to relationships. I never saw her as that kind of woman.

Also that whole Soso arch did nothing for me. Nothing.

Top season 2 moments:

* The scenes between Healy and Pennsatucky - very interesting
* All of the scenes with Rosa - when I understood she would be Vee's end (about around episode 10) she played it in a way that I didn't mind the trope of 'dying person making the last sacrifice' (because this is a definite trope.) The actress made me believe in that choice. She is absolutely brilliant.
* The scenes between Piper's best friend (name, sorry) and Larry. You just know it's inevitable - and in it's treachery, something very, very real. They're finally being honest about themselves.
* Sofia playing cards with her son
* That white female guard, she had a lot of good moments this season
* ...and her boyfriend singing to those nuns, lol
* Poussay's backstory, when her father says something like 'she's fine, thank you very much' in the last scene of the backstory - such a powerful moment

And finally
* That last scene with Suzanne where she's holding the UNO game, BREAK MY HEART WILL YOU
